What do you think about when you hear the words film noir? Classic black and white films from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Think Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Fedoras. Gangsters. Guns.

Film Noir has several identifying characteristic that become more apparent with every film viewed. There is a certain visual style and structure. Narrative devices are used. You’ll also notice a commonality towards plots, characters, settings, morality and tone.

This is a personal blog about film noir. After participating in the Film Noir course through Turner Classic Movies and Ball State University, where TCM launched The Summer of Darkness, with over 100 film noirs, I have been enjoying these classics even more.

Of course, its hard to ignore neo noir. It carries the similarities of the film noir forward. Here we will look at classic films from the 1960’s and 1970’s.
